AMD Radeon HD 7950 GPU (codenamed "Tahiti") belongs to AMD's latest GPU card series. See initial specs, release date and features. Price is still pending.

It was reported that AMD’s latest GPU unit, HD 7950, belonging to the Southern Islands GPU series and featuring 28nm technology process will be outed by the end of January this year.

The Radeon HD 7950, belongs to the HD 7900 series codenamed “Tahiti”, is considered a high-end GPU card just like the HD 7970 – but more affordable yet less advanced than the latter. No particular technical technical information for the HD 7950 can be found but it might be close with with that of HD 7970. The GPU contains the Tahiti processor which incorporates 4.3 billion transistors and 2048 unified shader processors, in addition to 128 texture-mapping units and 32 raster operators. The innovative architecture of the GPU features the increase in clock rate to 925Mhz, a peak fillrate of 118.4 gigatexel/s and a memory bandwidth of 264Gbs. The characteristics of the processor coupled with the Graphics Core Next architecture has made the AMD Radeon HD 7970 one of the fastest GPU existing nowadays.

On the other hand, Nvidia is reported to release its own 28nm-based Kepler GPU series around April of this year; alongside Intel’s release of its 22nm-based Ivy Bridge processor. The time frame is as such since Nvidia wants to make sure that the power consumption of its GPU series and manufacturing process are perfect. Initial GPU units belonging to Kepler series include: GK104 that will replace GTX 560Ti, GK107 for entry-level PC market, GK106 for mid-range markets, GK110 which is equipped with 2 x GK104 GPUs while the highest-end, GK112 is expected to out before the end of this year or early 2013.

Price for AMD Radeon HD 7950 is still unknown as of this moment but considering that the HD 7970 retails for $549, HD 7950 will launch at a much lower price.

Leaked benchmark results and specs for the Southern Islands AMD Radeon HD 7770 were posted online. See possible price for this GPU card. Release date is still undisclosed.

Gamers looking for a cost-effective and quality GPU cards turn to AMD Radeon most of the time. And initially this year, the company will be unleashing its next-gen GPU card series called Southern Islands, starting off with Radeon HD 7770, which utilizes 28nm fabrication technology. The HD 7770 is the successor to both HD 5770 and 6770 GPU cards. So what’s so special about it?

We can’t answer that in full since the company has yet to unveil the HD 7770, but reportedly, its performance is comparable with that of HD 6850 though retails at a much lower price. Initial specs include 4 x GDDR5 memory chips, 128-bit memory interface, supports up to 3 display outputs, HDMI, mini DisplayPort, powered by 6-pin PCI-E power connector, 100 W power consumption and a large cooling fan sitting on top of the GPU.

As part of the Southern Island GPU series, the HD 7770 is expected to support DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.2, VLIW4 architecture and the new AMD Graphic Core Next architecture. Part of the series, that’s also expected to be unveiled later this month is the HD 7900 series (codenamed “Tahiti”).

As mentioned, its performance is also top-notch that can be proven by benchmark results posted online. The 3DMark Benchmark setup used in the tests consist of a Z77 motherboard, Ivy Bridge ES processor (3.3 GHz clock frequency) and the AMD Catalyst 8.940 RC2 driver.

Shipment date is still undisclosed for the AMD Radeon HD 7770 but we heard that it’s price tag might hover around $90 to $110 – which is still affordable considering its built. Stay tuned.
